'go back to sleep'

Year: 2020

Medium: Photography

Dimensions: 40 x 50 cm

'go back to sleep' series explores the theme of temporal displacements where a temporal sense of belonging is subconsciously sought after. Memories and nostalgia recurrence in dreams inspire the escapism narrative with notions of identity, embodiment and physicality. In this regard, a dream is perceived almost as an extension of physical reality, where the intangible consciousness and the corporeal identity become distinct. Therefore, the mind is displaced from the body. Its longing to detach and reunite with a particular time and place through a subconscious realms captures a delicate yet romantic exquisite kind of pain.

Light trails Series

'Light trails'

Reflecting the artist's transition from the quiet simplicity of suburban life to the bustling pace of the city, this series encapsulates an exploration of the intricacies within various settings. Confronting the challenges of limitations and constant distractions, the artist sought to capture the essence of various settings while navigating the challenges imposed by limitations and the relentless presence of urban distractions.

With an intent to reclaim the relentless momentum of time and explore the technical nuances, the artist experimented with a basic mobile phone to capture moments amid distractions. The method delves into the interplay between time constraints and technical intricacies as the resulting visual effects cannot be achieved the same with sophisticated camera and luxury of time. Alongside the achieved quality, they serve to amplify the essence of these stolen moments within the cacophony of distractions that offer viewers a nuanced perspective. Each individual setting, initially isolated, gradually converges to unveil a new panoramic cityscape of spirited escapades, symbolizing the evolution and the transformative narrative woven within the series.

'ID' Series

'ID' Series

Year: 2018

Medium: Digital Inkjet Print Mounted on Foam Board

Dimensions: 42 x 59 cm

ID is short for identification/ identity/ identifier. This series of work expresses the artist's identity crisis concerning the obligated renunciation of citizenship and oath-taking process. The artist superimposed the voided immigration stamps from her hometown over her own passport identity photograph to express the journey to nowhere as she lost herself during the process. The ID Series aims to question plural citizenship as human rights and the notion of freedom in a democratic society; despite having a choice yet one is obliged to make one.

Cells are like pixels, fragments of the sums of their parts, which renew themselves over time whereby one's sense of self is constantly succeeded by the new present. While both realities coexist, one is always in the state of being, neither here nor there. Particularly in this scenario, it is a constant 'arrival' and 'departure'. A feeling of belonging to neither, a feeling of alienation.

_Influenza addresses the ubiquity and pervasiveness of social media that has shaped our insights of the perfect lifestyle. In response to Consumer Rights Day on 15th March 2019, with the theme “Trusted Smart Products”, this exhibition questions the intents of industrialism through influencers. Putting their reliability on the pedestal.

The collaboration led by to emerging artists, Thanchanog Ho Mai Chin and Magdalene Tuh, has drawn an investigation on the desires of one self and the satirical execution of advertisements that entice consumers. These brands have employed marketing strategies through the increasing influence of social media, the overwhelming push notifications, and intrusive banner and pop-up advertising which quietly dominate the web-space. Hence, consumers are thrilled to be monopolized by the perpeptual infiltration of marketing messages, and corporates have created a façade, making the intent of the product unknown.

This exhibition uses art to examine the anonymity of the consumeristic world, and to encourage consumers to be more discerning before making purchases.

At the same time, the exhibition showcases the domination of social media and how it influences the decision-making process of the consumers, by drawing out their dreams, desires and trust in social media recommendations.

to consume or to be consumed– How will you determine your fate?
